Sharing My Project Idea With The Class
Last Tuesday, March 20th, I shared my project idea with my Composition II class. Each of us were assigned to present our project idea to the class. The assignment was called "Pitch to the Sharks" and I had 3 minutes to share what I am doing for the Genius Hour project. To prepare for this assignment I typed out what I wanted to tell the class. I will post here what I typed up.
Learning a Foreign Language:
Pitching to the Sharks
Hi everyone. I chose to learn a
foreign language for my Genius Hour project. This idea started in January right
after New Year’s. Around this time, I made a New Year’s resolution to travel to
a foreign country in 2018. I have always wanted to travel somewhere outside of
the U.S. and I have a list of places I would love to go. Japan being on the top
of that list. Since February, I have been planning on where I want to go in
Japan and I have been figuring out how much it will all cost. When Professor
Todd first told us about this project, learning Japanese was the first idea to
come to me. Learning Japanese is perfect for this project because I will enjoy
learning the language and learning about the Japanese culture, as well as
getting prepared for my trip. My plan is to first start learning to count, learning
essential phrases, and learning to write and read two of the Japanese
alphabets. In my first week, I got my learning materials such as books, apps,
and flash cards. For the second week, I will learn to count, start learning to
write, and learn how to pronounce words. In the third and fourth week, I plan
to continue practicing how to write the alphabet and learn words and phrases. I
hope that in my last two weeks I can learn grammar, so that I can try to form
sentences. In my blogs each week, I will write about my progress and stuff that
learn about Japan. I want to research their customs and culture so that I can
be respectful when I go. I will use the internet to research Japan but as I am
learning Japanese I will use books and use apps for practice. I know that I
will really only scratch the surface with this project because I only have six
weeks. This is going to be challenging but foreign language was one of my
favorite classes in high school and I am really excited to try to do this on my
own. By the end of this project I hope to know more about Japan and be more
prepared for my trip to Japan.
