Week 3 Entry
This past week was spring break for me, so I had plenty of time to work on Japanese. I have also been watching videos on Youtube about Japan. My goal this week was to find out more about transportation in Japan and continue learning Japanese. Both of these goals were accomplished and I haven't really ran into any obstacles. Japanese is different than English, Spanish, and French in many ways, but that is probably why I like learning it so much. In high school, I took French sophomore year because that was the only language the school I went to offered. Then, I changed schools and took Spanish my junior and senior years because that was the only foreign language they offered. Now since I left, that school offers German and Spanish. I really liked those classes, but now I am learning Japanese on my own and I can go at my own pace.
In the book that is teaching me how to speak Japanese, I have finished two chapters. The book started out by telling me how to use the book, ten reasons why I should learn Japanese, and facts about Japan. It had a section that explained Japan's Geography and climate. It also had information about Japanese society and how to communicate properly with the Japanese. I looked at the first two pages of Chapter 3 and it taught how to pronounce Japanese sounds.
In my writing book, I have finished learning ten Hiragana syllables. I am using two writing books and they are both quite different. One of them has a little drawing to help you remember the character. For example, the character "ki" looks like a key and "ku" looks like a chicken's opening it's beak, going coo. Next week I will move on to the next ten and practice the ten I learned this week.
I watched a couple Youtube videos on how to purchase a subway ticket in Japan. One person recommended that I get an app called Tokyo Subway Navigation and have Google Maps. Both will help to find out how much to pay for a ticket. At the ticket machine, I can choose what language to use. They have English and then you pick the amount of money it will cost you to complete your trip. That is why you need to have the apps to figure out how much where you want to go will cost. The machines do not accept cards, so I would have to use cash or coins to purchase the ticket. The machine will give me a ticket and it will be used at the ticket gate so I can get on the subway. This information is very new to me, I have no experience with trains or subways. I will definitely keep looking up information about the subways.
