Starting Out


Hello! My name is Sarah and this is my first time creating a blog. I am creating a blog for the first time because I am going to share my experience of learning a new language. Each student in my Composition II class is starting a blog and creating or learning something for a project called  "Genius Hour." It is really exciting to learn something new. I have always had a curiosity for foreign languages and culture. This summer I am looking forward to traveling to a country I have never been to before. I'm saving up to go to Japan and I think that learning Japanese will help me be a little more prepared for when I'm there.

I, at first, had a hard time thinking of what to do for my project. We could pretty much do anything for the project. This project allows us to spend 20% of class exploring a topic that we get to chose. Around New Year's this year, I got motivated to save up my money for a trip. I have never been to another country other than the United States, but I have always wanted to travel. I think this project will be fun and will help prepare me for when I do travel to Japan.

My plan is to learn Japanese and learn about the Japanese culture as well. I will start out with greetings and also writing. Japanese has 3 alphabets. I will start out with learning one of the basic alphabets and if I get it memorized, then I will start learning the next basic alphabet. I hope to start learning about grammar so that I can make sentences too.

The Finish Line - Week 6

This journey is coming to an end. Yesterday was the last day that I worked on my Japanese studies. To be honest, these last six weeks have flown by so fast, but I feel like I accomplished a lot. My goal was to finish Hiragana and finish around 10 chapters in my speaking book(Conversational Japanese). I was able to accomplish both of these goals. I finished learning how to write the 46 Hiragana this week with the last group of eight characters. I also did chapters 8, 9, and 10 in the Conversation Japanese book. Chapter 8 went over many essential Japanese greetings. Chapter 9 went over what to say when you meet people for the first time and how to properly start conversations. Chapter 10 went over how to talk about yourself, such as personal information, hobbies, family, etc. In these chapters, I learned about mannerisms and how to be polite and friendly when trying to have a conversation with someone who speaks Japanese. Sharing My Project Idea With The Class

Last Tuesday, March 20th, I shared my project idea with my Composition II class. Each of us were assigned to present our project idea to the class. The assignment was called "Pitch to the Sharks" and I had 3 minutes to share what I am doing for the Genius Hour project. To prepare for this assignment I typed out what I wanted to tell the class. Genius Hour Project Proposal

This is a proposal I wrote for Composition II class. It was due today and I am supposed to add it to my blog, so enjoy. A Proposal for MACC Kirksville Campus to Add a Foreign Language Class Problem             The problem with the classes MACC Kirksville Higher Education Center offers, is that it does not include foreign language classes. When I was planning my fall 2017 course schedule with my advisor, I was expecting to choose a foreign language class. Much to my surprise, I found out the Kirksville campus does not offer any foreign language classes. I was so surprised I thought about changing colleges.
